Mchale of SSA was third, coming in at 2: Thomas of Byrd came out on top with a 1: This meet is a state against state competition with athletes from many teams coming together under their home banner.
Last year team Louisiana had a successful performance which we noted here. The Great Southwest Classic features some of the best athletes from around the country, coming from both coasts. The three day competition also has plenty of time for the athletes to enjoy the area as the team takes a trip up to Sante Fe to tour the city as well as takes a trip up to Sandia Peak to overlook the entire city of Albuquerque.
Byrd who has been going to the meet since the early s when he would bring his sprinter, national star Jonathan Wade, to compete against great athletes from across the nation.
Since then super stars like Mondo Duplantis and Sean Burrell have competed for the team. If you are interested in going to the meet or you have an athlete you feel is ready to compete on the national stage, here is a link to the meet info packet.

State Meet Preview We are now in the final week of the season here in Louisiana although expect many of the top athletes in the state to participate in track meets throughout the summer and we will take a look at what you can expect from the state meet this weekend. We will look at who the favorites are for the 5A titles and what the top 5 most anticipated distance races will be.
In the girls title race in 5A, two teams have really set themselves up in the best position to compete for the victory. SJA and Lafayette come into the meet being the only two teams expected to score in the 50s, although we all know that what is expected and what actually happens are two very different things.
SJA is the more complete team, having athletes participate in over half the events which gives more scoring opportunities and will look to try to set themselves up with an early lead out of the field in which they are projected to score in 4 of the 7 events.
Lafayette is top heavy and will mainly rely on the distance events and relays to get the bulk of their points. The possibility to medal in all 6 of those races is the main reason why they can compete for the title while being projected to score in less than half of the events. Competing for third is Zachary and Curtis who are sending decent sized teams to state and should one team slip up, they could easily slip into the top 2. On the boys side we will see a very different scenario. The two teams competing for the title will be Zachary and Curtis, two programs that are top heavy and only will have a few opportunities to score.
Zachary is projected to score in 6 events and Curtis 7. Curtis has the upper hand in the sense that they have more scoring opportunities and have 3 current state champions on the roster who know how to win when it counts.
Depending on how their field events go, they may mathematically have won the meet before running events even start.
SECTION IV CLASSIFICATION AND ALIGNMENT
At that point the other teams may just be competing for pride. Scottlandville and Catholic are two teams to watch for in the hunt for third place. So now here is a list of the top 5 distance races you should keep an eye on at the state meet.
Here in theevery seed time is between 1: This means the entire field could around their season best and all enter the final curve together. With the field this tight, it will be a fight for position every step of the way and those athletes not ready to stick their nose up in the front may be left in the dust. Four girls enter the race having run sub 5: With the front half of the race led by girls with great speed and the back half quite a ways behind fitness-wise, it would be thought that the only way this race goes out hard is if Lauren Hendry of SJA decides to make it honest from the gun.
Sydney Minor of Lafayette also enters with a sub 5: Either way it should be a fun race to watch and see what strategy is taken by the field. Chantaya Griffin of Carencro has run 2: That alone will make this race fun to watch, but the depth of the field will surprise you for a 4A event.

This race also features 3 other girls who have run 2: Adam had been very savvy in his races against Hunter during cross country, beating him out for the cross country state title.
These two will probably enter the field simply racing each other, but there is some very good talent right behind them. Two in the field will bring 4: Those two will also be doubling back from thethough, and if Appleton lays down a fast first mile he may be solo the rest of the way, but there is still a chance this race goes out slower and allows the other top runners, as well as the fresh runners doing the only, to be close behind.

ttfca | MEET CALENDAR
Starting with the girlsthe current top two seeds both come from Lafayette, Angelle Primeaux and Sydney Minor, though the next 4 seeds are currently within 3 seconds of them. Primeaux has had great performances this spring like splitting 2: She did win the indoor title in 5: The boys is a race where every athlete is a wild card. Currently no athlete is under 1: Alexc Snell of Dutchtown currently leads the group at 1: Adam has a shot at the title in thethough he also has a good shot to podium in the It will be interesting to see what races some of these athletes choose.31 5A District Track Meet 2012
He has run He definitely has a bigger upside but chose the last year. The girls is open season with no runner running any eye popping times. Actually, an athlete from 2A, 3A, and 4A have all run significantly faster so far this season in the than in 5A, leaving one to wonder if those athletes were chasing times in other events or if this really will be as open as it looks. Angelle did run that 5: Sydney Minor of Lafayette also ran a 5: She did also run a 5: The boys has some similar issues with clearly establishing the favorites.
It would be assumed that Hunter Appleton could run under 4: The only other runner in the field with a sub 4: Appleton looks far more comfortable on the track than the XC course though and should have to really struggle in the first two rounds of qualifying to not enter the state meet as the favorite. After that, throw a dart at a dartboard full of name and that will be the next best guess on who will finish in a podium spot.
Will Dart of Airline split a 4: Lauren Hendry of SJA is currently 30 seconds ahead of the nearest competition in the 5A after running a converted Everything else from there is rather close with the next best athlete being She may be the next big name to watch.
Four other runners fall between Then there is the boys which, as we mentioned before, involves current 3 all time runner in LA Hunter Appleton with his 9: If Hunter runs his own race, it will be very hard for any other runners to follow him.
Even if he cruised to a 9: Will Dart of Airline is currently the second seed at 9: We will obviously know a bit more about how this will play out after district when we can see who chooses what races to compete in for state qualifying. In the team standings, we have some interesting races. On the boys side, who else would be on top but John Curtis?
They are all but a lock for points out the field, having Zechariah Blake at the helm who could win all three throws. At long jump they have the indoor state champ Lance Williams who also has the fastest time in the state all-conditions with a Burrell will be the favorite in the and but will need to have a good showing in the hurdles and whichever relay he lands on. Ouachita Parish, Scottlandville and Catholic are the teams who will be fighting for third.
