Otherwise, leave 4 hours early. Parking is a nightmare. Too many exiting people trying to get onto a 2 lane road.
BUT, once you're inside it is easy to navigate the area. Here for the Oregon Trail Rally for the second year in a row, and it's always a blast. Plenty of food and drinks, and tons of rally cars. The Porta Crappers are clean, and there are regular restroom facilities as well. The staff is always friendly, and they've never had an attitude either. The bonus is that amongst all the rain as of late, it's sunny and 70 degrees! PIR has a newly established rule that no spiked tires are allowed.
I was not offered a refund or any kind of compensation. Other than that the event is enjoyable but it is absolutely necessary to make this known beforehand in my opinion.
Good place to drive faster then your neighbors or law enforcement deem acceptable. Weekend drag nights are pretty fun, even for a girl who is not into racing or cars. It was a new and interesting way to spend a Friday. It is worth checking out and seems fun for the entire family. The light show is a yearly event where you get to sit in your nice warm car, listen to Christmas songs, and slowly drive on the track looking at the lights they have set up everywhere.
Since the weather in Oregon is usually terrible in the winter, the best part about this Christmas tradition is that you don't have to worry about if it is raining or not due to the fact that you stay in your car the entire time. This is the second year I've been, and I'm planning on doing this yearly; it really gets you in the Christmas spirit. We came to see the Christmas lights during the holiday season on a Christmas trolley. In the beginning, we couldn't figure out what some of the light structures were, until a couple seated in front of us got it and started singing "The 12 days of Christmas".
There was one odd part. It was the numerous palm trees at the beginning and dinosaurs at the end that didn't feel very Christmasy. I'd love to hear from the company as to what their significance was - in relation to Christmas.
This earns a 4 star rating, because seeing it on a trolley while drinking cocoa and singing carols made it a lovely experience.
I'm not so sure it'd rank that if I was doing it in a car. Of course, I am a grown up - without kids- and this may be something a child would rate a 5. Regardless, if you have a family, you really should bring them out here around Christmas.
What I love most about this track is that there are so many wonderful spots to watch racing.
Portland International Raceway // Track Map
Truth be told, there really isn't a bad spot to sit and watch racing. If you like to watch cars go fast, there's the front straightaway, if you like seeing cars maneuver curves, there are a variety to choose from.
For the most part, the track is very easy to move around on, and for some events, such as the Portland Historics, a bicycle is recommended, especially if you want to camp there.
The track is big, nearly two miles. So walking can take up a lot of your time. Parts of the track hhave certainly seen better days, such as the railings, which are in desperate need of a coat of paint, and the roads to the back part of the track could due with paving instead of the brutal gravel. If you're in need of a bite to eat, the Fast Track Cafe the track's permanent concession stand is decent.
However, their prices are through the roof! It's like they know they can charge insane prices, so they do it. The staff their is not great, and they have screwed up orders of the years. Speaking of staff, the rest of the track staff and volunteers are very nice and tend to be helpful when they can. Not all of the volunteers seem to be in the know. I think it varies from event to event.
Things to remember when you come to a race I recommend the folding kind with a back, since they don't have backs either.
It gets brutal out there and the grandstands don't have shade. Most concessions, vendors, etc. Most event tickets really are a good price for the entertainment you get. I can't recommend the Historic Races enough. You get to see loads of wonderful cars. You get to see them up-close and personal, chat with drivers, and see the cars race! Came here for the graffiti run today! Excellent place for a run, especially with the refreshing view of a body of water not sure what to call it after seeing only dry grass for a while.
The route we were running on was nicely paved with a few gravel parts near the end which kind of made the run a little more difficult, but no biggie.
I haven't been to any other events here, but I'm sure more runs are in order!
I was at the MotoCrosa Track Day event yesterday. Fun event but tired. We didn't know weather it was going to get cancelled or not due to the Oregon unpredictable weather but it went well It didn't rain but sprinkling through out the day, the sun showed up for a few minutes at least something. So I'm not going to bother writing about it. But I kept my own personal list of what to bring to the next event.
Which might be useful to some of you. A canopy or big market umbrella it can get windy here so bring sand bags, cinder blocks or something to put at the poles I seriously have no idea how to call them. A Cooler I will bring a bigger cooler next time 3. Drinking water bring plenty 4. Walking shoes I will bring a pair of flip-flops too 6. Little table maybe fordable? Paper towels or else you will get to use tissue or toilet papers from the restroom. I saw a guy cut out a carpet about 10' x 10' I probably won't go to that extend but it was quite nice for him and his guests.
